Always pampering his pride and joy, the previous owner was not afraid to spend some serious cash to keep the car in prime condition (records and receipts for maintenance and parts included). Upgraded Audio (original radio included). It still looks and drives wonderfully some 55 years after being built at Ford's Wixom, Michigan plant. Chrome Horn Ring shines bright and clear. This "Bullet Bird" -as it is known among enthusiasts- features Ford's trademark big, circular taillights that looked like rockets, razor-sharp tailfins, and tastefully restrained chrome ornamentation. Powered by a bullet-proof 390ci V8, developing 300 horses in standard trim, and the smooth Cruise-O-Matic three-speed auto tranny, the open-air T-Bird, with its coil-spring front suspension, was among the best-riding cars of the day. It is a timelessly beautiful design and 1 of only 9,884 convertibles produced in 1962. Still a nice car, but not what I would call "mint." I think his asking price of $30,000 is reasonable for what it is too, although I didn't see it in person so I can't vouch for the condition. I was a little leary when he described the car as being "mint" in every way, when you can clearly see some wear and age in the engine compartment. If you look at the trim codes the interior is Chestnut as well, he misidentified it as red. ![]() I believe the owner was wrong about the interior color. This is the one that was on ebay, I contacted the owner after the auction was over. Gotta go with what you like over what's more valuable to the public, sometimes. I was interested in this one for the color combo, but I ended up really liking the white interior on the one I ended up with, even though it's not as rare. Thanks for the input guys, I ended up passing on this one for a red/white convertible (I'll start a new thread for that). The matching chestnut interior looks much better. That car I believe had a red interior that I did not like with the Chestnut exterior. One was on Ebay a week or two ago perhaps it was this one. The 2Y89Z code I believe is the cutover code on Feb 2nd, 1962 for SR designation (vs. The data plate seems to show a Feb 8th Build date and the VIN number (143004) seems to fit the build date IMHO. I also checked my DuPont paint chip dates and it seems the Chestnut color was available for the start of the 1962 model run. The car comes equipped with an X code 352 engine (numbers matching) and a 3 speed Fordomatic transmission. Exterior paint is color code J Rangoon Red. All in all, probably a fairly rare color combo. 4,200 1962 Ford Galaxie Sunliner 500 J Rangoon Red ALL ORIGINAL 4,200. There is a high Probability of Error due to my limited sample size (with the simple math extrapolation). Soooooooooo, if you take the 1427 SR's built in 1962 *0.025 then I come up with ~36 SR's produced with that color combo. I remembered that there was a section on "M" code series 1962 Sports Roadsters and of the ~40 documented with color/trim code info only one (1) (0.025%) was in the Chestnut color.
